Counselling For Chronic Illness

A diagnosis of Chronic Illness comes with many challenges along the way.  It leads to grief due a loss of health, function, identity and hopes and dreams for the future.  It can have financial strain due to loss of employment and medical costs.  There can also be a loss of independence due to reliance on doctors, nurses, family and friends for care.

Counselling provides space for those people who live with a chronic illness to process their grief and express their emotions.   It can assist them to adapt to change,  develop coping strategies, set boundaries, explore medical trauma and set goals for their wellbeing.  Counselling can also assist carers with emotional support, stress management and coping skills as they care for their loved ones.

Margaret has lived experience in this space and understands the loss of control, medical trauma, endless appointments, anxiety around upcoming tests and their results and having to advocate for yourself so doctors will investigate.  As a Registered Nurse  Div 1 (Non Practising), Margaret has had formal education, practical experience and has developed an awareness of how chronical illness affect her clients.

Examples of medical conditions where counselling can support your journey include autoimmune disease, a cancer diagnosis, cardiovascular disease, respiratory conditions, diabetes, kidney disease, endometriosis and musculoskeletal conditions for example.

Margaret provides flexibility to her clients and can do home or hospital visits if required (conditions apply).  Online or phone counselling is also available, along with traditional counselling in a counselling room in Ballarat.
