What to Expect

Step 1 - Email or Text Me

The first step is usually the hardest.  Deciding to reach out for help.  That is totally normal and very common.  As I am busy counselling, please email or text me so that I can can reply when I am able to make a date and time with you for a FREE 15-minute enquiry phone call.

Step 2 – 15-Minute Enquiry Phone Call.

This is where you give me a brief general explanation of why you need counselling.  I will ask you some questions and explain the process, including fees and that payment is required prior to each session.  This is an opportunity to see if we are both the right fit for each other.  You can also ask any burning questions you have about counselling and our services.  If we decide to go ahead, we make a time for your first appointment.

Step 3 – Intake and Consent Forms

I will email you a copy of our Service Agreement / Consent Form which you will need to sign.  I will also send a copy of an intake form so I can gather some more information about you before we meet.  An invoice will be sent to you a couple of days before our first appointment and thank you for making payment 24 hours or more before our first session.

Step 4 – Our First Session (60 or 90 minutes)

I will explain confidentiality.  I may ask you some further questions. You will share your story.  There may be some tears and that is okay.  I am used to tears and have been where you are now.  I will listen and encourage reflection.  I will use this time to help understand your needs and we may set some goals together for counselling.  You may be given some short tasks to do at home between sessions.  Please be aware that it is normal to feel emotionally exhausted after counselling as you share your story and process your emotions.

If the client is an adolescent, I will meet with the parent(s) alone first to hear their concerns.

Step 5 – Session 2 and Beyond

Appointments may be weekly or fortnightly to begin with and can be spaced out further later on.  If the client is an adolescent, the second session and beyond will be with the young person.  A parent update session can be booked as needed after a number of sessions.

* Remember, counselling is not a quick fix.  It will not produce results immediately.  It is a process that is done over time and requires work and commitment.  It is also important to find a counsellor who is right for you.  If you want to change counsellors or cancel your sessions please let me know.  I can help you source another counsellor.
